Acne-Prone Skin Care: Caring for your skin with three simple steps
Acne-prone skin requires special care and attention to prevent breakouts and maintain a healthy complexion. The three essential steps to consider for an effective skincare routine include cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing. This article will provide you with an overview of the importance of each step and tips to help you establish a customized routine that works best for your skin.
Cleansing
The first step in an acne-prone skincare routine is proper cleansing. Cleansing
helps remove dirt, oil, makeup, and other impurities from your
skin's surface, preventing clogged pores and subsequent
breakouts.
Some tips in choosing a suitable cleanser are:
- Opt for a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser specifically designed for acne-prone skin.
- Avoid harsh or abrasive cleansers that can strip the skin of its natural oils and cause irritation.
Cleanse your face twice a day, in the morning and at night, using lukewarm
water. Be careful not to over do it, as over-cleansing can cause excessive
dryness and irritation.
At Medical Aesthetics (MA), we have various cleaners for your skin, depending on
your skin type. For most common skin types, we would recommend the MA Hydrating
Cleanser and for more sensitive skins, we also have the MA Gentle Cleanser. If

Moles are small, pigmented skin growths resulting from the clustering of
melanocytes - the cells responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that
determines our skin, hair, and eye color. Moles can be present at birth or
develop throughout life, with some people having 10 to 40 moles by adulthood
(AAD, 2023).
The formation of moles is influenced by a combination of genetic factors and sun
exposure. Certain genes predispose individuals to have more moles, while
ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight can increase the number and size of
moles an individual has (MPG, 2023).
Exfoliating
Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores, promoting
a smoother and more even complexion. For acne-prone skin, do select
a suitable product that will not irritate your skin.
You may opt for a gentle chemical exfoliant that contains salicylic acid or
glycolic acid. This helps to minimize clogged pores and promotes a
radiant complexion.
Do limit exfoliation to 1-2 times per week, as over-exfoliation can damage the
skin's barrier and exacerbate acne. Do pay attention to your skin's response to
exfoliation. If your skin becomes irritated, reduce the frequency or switch to a
milder product.
At Medical Aesthetics, we have our own exfoliant which you may use as part of
your skincare routine.
Moisturizing
Moisturizing is a crucial step for acne-prone skin to maintain its
natural barrier. Also, when your skin is dry, your body makes more
oil which leads to more clogged pores.
Ideal qualities for choosing a suitable moisturizer are oil-free and
non-comedogenic (meaning it will not clog your pores).
At Medical Aesthetics, we carry various moisturizers for different skins. Talk
to our friendly doctor for more information.
In a Nutshell
A well-balanced skincare routine that incorporates gentle cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing is essential for managing acne-prone skin. By carefully selecting the right products and following a consistent routine, you can significantly improve your skin's health and appearance.
